It is the lowest level to which any character can sink, this is the face of a man staring at the mouths of Satan and convincing himself he is seeing God, utterly fragmented by suffering and just wanting to rest. That is what makes the heights to which he eventually soars so impactful, this single moment actually made the manga a modern masterpiece, it is the absolute zenith of any aspiring storyteller, and a testament to the psychological fragility of a lonely man.
