Medieval crossbows are very weird, and very powerful. When I was a kid, I was always confused by the U-shape on the front -- that's actually a stirrup you stick your foot in. Relatively weaker crossbows like this one were most commonly drawn by applying downwards pressure like that, or by using a lever or claw-latch.
Stronger siege crossbows, by contrast, generally were drawn by attaching a cranequin (a removable circular crank) or by a dedicated windlass (a large two-handed crank at the rear of the body.) Their draw weight could be over a thousand pounds!
