The hand cannon, also known as a 'handgonne,' is the earliest true firearm developed in human history, consisting of a simple barrel on a stick. Unlike the later matchlock or flintlock -- it has no firing mechanism -- a simple hole on the top is used to ignite powder inside of the cannon. Hand cannons first saw widespread use in China, and may have even been used during the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty's invasion of Japan. Brought westward by the Mongols, they eventually arrived in Europe during the early 14th century -- before the widespread use of plate armor!
