That wooden, white mask is related to Japanese traditional folklore. The hannya is a mask that represents a female 「貴女 •（きじょ • kijo）」demon woman.

Those kind of 「鬼 •（おに • Oni）」always have been associated with their manifesting in evil, vengeful propensities.
