Ever wondered where the name comes from? The red hourglass-adorned spiders we all know are actually female spiders; the male is surprisingly much smaller. The name "widow" comes from the fact that the females are known to devour their smaller counterparts, essentially "widowing" them. For these spiders (and many other carnivorous insects) its a bug-eat-bug world, and not as an idiom.
