Roblox Removes 100M Unrated Experiences: Weekly News

Roblox Removes 100M Unrated Experiences: Weekly News

In what marks one of the most significant content moderation actions in Roblox history, the platform made over 100 million unrated experiences unplayable this week following its September 30 deadline. This headline-grabbing move was just one of many major announcements that reshaped the Roblox ecosystem over the past seven days.

The Great Purge: 100 Million Unrated Experiences Removed

After months of warnings, Roblox followed through on its promise to remove access to all unrated content after September 30, 2025. The result? More than 100 million experiences became unplayable overnight in what represents the platform's most aggressive content curation effort to date.

This sweeping change stems from Roblox's commitment to making content ratings a central tool for users and parents to understand which experiences are age-appropriate. The company didn't leave developers entirely in the lurch—they worked closely with creators to help them get their experiences rated ahead of the deadline. For the more than 200,000 unrated experiences that are no longer maintained by active developers, Roblox built a special process to provide ratings automatically.

While this move temporarily reduced the catalog of playable experiences, it represents a significant step toward making Roblox safer and more transparent for its younger user base. Parents can now have greater confidence that their children won't accidentally stumble upon unvetted content.

Safety First: Expanded Voice Moderation and Legacy Content Cleanup

The unrated content removal wasn't Roblox's only safety initiative this week. The platform announced substantial improvements to its real-time voice safety model, which can now detect misbehavior—including swearing and bullying—in 15 languages. The new additions include Indonesian, Polish, Thai, Chinese, Tagalog, Arabic, and Russian, dramatically expanding the platform's ability to moderate voice chat for its global community.

In another housecleaning effort, Roblox conducted a comprehensive audit of its nearly 20-year-old content library. The result was the removal of 800,000 avatar items and a staggering 1.8 million usernames and display names that contained inappropriate references to real-world events violating the platform's Community Standards. Roblox has also trained its automated systems to detect and block these types of references moving forward, preventing similar content from appearing in the future.

These efforts are part of a broader safety push—Roblox has shipped more than 100 safety initiatives since January 2025 alone, demonstrating the company's commitment to becoming what it calls "the safest place on the internet."

Developer Tools: New APIs and Monetization Opportunities

While safety dominated the headlines, developers received plenty of exciting updates this week that will fundamentally change how they build and monetize experiences.

Advanced Video API Enters Beta

Building on last year's successful Advanced Audio API, Roblox introduced an Advanced Video API that allows developers to synchronize video content and control 3D audio within their experiences. This powerful new tool connects instances like Wires and AudioListeners, giving creators unprecedented control over multimedia elements in their games. Imagine synchronized music videos, interactive cinema experiences, or tutorial systems that feel more immersive than ever before.

Avatar Makeup Studio Launches

Fashion-forward creators will rejoice at the new Makeup Studio Beta, which enables the creation and application of makeup to Dynamic Heads.

The system features Universal Fit using the new WarpTextTransfer API and high-performance layering through the AssetService:ComposeDecalAsync API, which allows multiple makeup textures to be combined seamlessly. This opens up entirely new possibilities for avatar customization and could spawn a whole new category of cosmetic items on the platform.

Share Link API: Deep Linking Gets Easy

Developers can now programmatically create short, customizable links using the new Share Link API (SocialService:PromptLinkSharing). This feature enables creators to generate links that take players directly to specific moments or locations within an experience—perfect for viral marketing, social media sharing, or helping friends jump into the action together. The potential for growth and user acquisition through this tool is enormous.

Model Monetization Coming Soon

In perhaps the most financially significant announcement for asset creators, Roblox revealed that later this month, developers will be able to sell models on the Creator Store for real USD. This expansion of the creator economy means that 3D modelers and asset creators can finally monetize their work directly, rather than relying solely on experience-based revenue. If you've been building a library of high-quality models, now's the time to start pricing them for sale.

Regional Pricing for Developer Products

Recognizing the global nature of its platform, Roblox introduced regional pricing for developer products. This allows creators to offer region-specific pricing that reflects local economies, potentially making in-game purchases more accessible to players in countries with weaker currencies while maximizing revenue in stronger markets. It's a win-win that could significantly boost conversion rates for developers.

Quality of Life Improvements

Several smaller but impactful updates rounded out the week:

Proximity Prompt Indicators entered beta testing, adding visual indicators that show players where nearby interactive prompts are located. This helps guide players to interactable objects and reduces the visual clutter when multiple prompts are in close proximity.

Avatar Auto-Setup received an update that now supports user-guided setups, allowing developers to override generated avatar components with their own. You can now provide partially built avatars that are reused during the generation process, giving you precise control over the final result.

Documentation Search got a major overhaul with the ability to search within specific categories, enhanced result scanning with icons and text highlighting, an "Ask Assistant" feature for conversational queries, and full keyboard navigation support. Finding what you need in Roblox's extensive documentation just got significantly easier.

Community and Platform Updates

The DevForum received a new structure with the addition of a "Lounge" category featuring two subcategories: "Creating on Roblox" and "Roblox Discussion." This change addresses the fact that too many posts in "Developer Discussion" were getting moderated for not being explicitly about development. The new Lounge provides a home for broader platform discussions.

Roblox also announced testing for server list page updates designed to enhance privacy and make it more difficult for users to be targeted during streams or other public events. While the details are still being finalized, this change aims to balance easy connection between friends with enhanced privacy controls.

On a sadder note, Roblox announced that Guilded—its Discord competitor—will sunset at the end of 2025. The company stated it wants to focus on helping creators build communities with users of all ages in a safe and civil way, presumably within the main Roblox platform itself.

Community Councils: Amplifying User Voices

Roblox continues to engage directly with its community through specialized councils. The second annual Teen Council kicked off this month, bringing together teenage users to provide insights that inform future products and policies. Additionally, a new Community Safety Council was announced at this year's Roblox Developers Conference, giving creators a direct line to influence safety-related decisions.

Security Tightening: Fast Flag Allowlist

In response to widespread misuse, Roblox introduced a Fast Flag Allowlist mechanism that limits the number of locally configurable Fast Flags to only those explicitly listed. While this may frustrate some power users who relied on obscure flags for customization, it's a necessary security measure to combat exploits and maintain platform stability.

Looking Ahead

With Q3 2025 earnings scheduled for October 30, the business side of Roblox will soon be under scrutiny. These product updates—particularly the model monetization and regional pricing initiatives—suggest Roblox is doubling down on creator monetization as a key growth driver.

The removal of 100 million unrated experiences represents a bold bet that quality and safety will trump quantity in attracting and retaining users, especially parents making decisions about what platforms their children can access. Combined with the expanded voice moderation and content cleanup, Roblox is clearly positioning itself as the responsible choice in user-generated content platforms.

For developers, this week brought an embarrassment of riches: new APIs for video and makeup, improved avatar tools, regional pricing, model monetization, and better documentation. The message is clear—Roblox is investing heavily in giving creators the tools they need to build higher-quality, more profitable experiences.

As we move into October, all eyes will be on how the unrated content removal affects platform engagement metrics and whether the new monetization tools can meaningfully grow the creator economy. One thing's certain: Roblox isn't standing still.
